Your support has always meant more than words can express. Because of your kindness, ImmaCare continues to provide shelter, outreach and housing to individuals experiencing homelessness throughout the Hartford region. Every warm meal, every safe bed and every step toward stability begins with your generosity.
I am writing at a meaningful moment in my own journey with ImmaCare. After more than 13 years as Executive Director, and more than 27 years devoted to nonprofit leadership in the Hartford region, I have made the decision to retire later this fall.
Leading ImmaCare has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I have had the opportunity to work alongside an extraordinary team of staff, board members, partners and supporters who share a deep commitment to this mission. Together, we have built something truly special.
Over the years, I’ve been proud to be part of many important milestones: securing the future of our shelter in its longtime home; completing the renovation that created the ImmaCare Navigation Center; expanding our housing initiatives; and establishing an Endowment Fund that now exceeds $750,000. We also navigated the unprecedented challenges of the COVID pandemic—never losing sight of the needs of the people who rely on us each day.

But what I value most is not any single accomplishment; it is the strength of the organization we have built together. ImmaCare is well-positioned for the future, with a dedicated team, a clear strategic direction, and a deep commitment to those we serve.
The need in our community remains significant. Every day, individuals and families face the harsh realities of homelessness and housing instability. While my role will soon change, the mission we share continues with urgency and purpose.
Through the years, I’ve seen both the successes and the challenges faced by those we serve. Take Jimmy. He came to the shelter focused on ending his homelessness and securing housing. Without any prompting, he would help sweep, wipe down tables and serve breakfast and lunch.
With the support of his case manager, and after securing the necessary documentation, Jimmy eventually was matched to housing. To his delight, he moved into ImmaCare’s project-based affordable housing building, Casa de Francisco.
Over time, I’ve watched his health and demeanor improve as he adjusted to being housed rather than unhoused. Today, Jimmy participates in groups, and when we see each other in the lobby, we exchange a friendly greeting.
This is what we do. We support clients on their journey from experiencing homelessness to experiencing life in their own home.
I have great confidence in ImmaCare’s future and in the leadership that will follow. With the support of our Board and a thoughtful transition process already underway, I know this organization will continue to grow, adapt and serve with compassion and excellence.
At this critical time, I ask you to continue standing with ImmaCare. Your generosity ensures that our neighbors have access to shelter, housing and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. It is your support that makes this work possible—today and for years to come.
Thank you for the trust you have placed in me and in this organization. It has been an honor to serve.
With deep gratitude,

Lou Gilbert
Executive Director
